Guide To Sleep Dentistry
A lot of people are scared by going to the dentist and you can see why! The thought of having a drill or other piece of surgical equipment put into your mouth when you are watching every move isn’t exactly appealing, and it can be quite painful depending on what you are having done too. That is why sleep dentistry is staying to catch on. But what exactly is it? And does it work?
Dentistry while you sleep does sound a bit too good to be true for most people. But is it really a reality? Well, it is possible but not in all cases. What the sleep dentists will do is meet with you face to face to see whether you are suitable. You will then be given medication the next time you go to the dentist so that when you arrive there you will be drowsy. Of course this means that you will need someone else to drive you there and back. While you won’t be completely asleep, you will in most cases not be anxious about the coming procedure and will find it much easier.
Many people say that it feels like you are in the dentist chair but at such a great distance that it doesn’t matter. Usually you will not really be aware of what’s going on, but will then remember the dentist being told that what he is doing is over.
So it does work, but sleep sedation dentistry is mainly for people who have a real phobia of dentist work and therefore wouldn’t be able to have the procedure without some sort of sleep dentistry. Usually it is only used in cases where the surgery or operation is going to take al ong amount of time and hence it makes sense to have the person sedated in the chair.
There are also different levels of sedation. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the level that is most suitable for you. This will depend on how much anxiety you have as well as how much you are going to have done on that particular day.
You should talk to your doctor about sleep dentistry if it is something that you would consider useful. Not all dentists offer it, but more and more do so you should have a chat and see whether it is possible for you to have, if you feel that you really need it to get through your next dentist appointment.
