Guide To Getting Braces

Whether you are a teenager or an adult, it can be a daunting prospect when you are just about to get your braces put on. Getting braces is quite a stressful time, as we aren’t really sure what to expect. What does it feel like? Will it hurt? And how long will I have them on for? A lot of these questions depend on the amount of treatment that you need to have performed on your teeth, as well as the dentist that you are using, but there are certain things that don’t change.

When you are getting braces on there are a few things that you need to remember. First of all I would always take a picture of your teeth before you go and put them on, so that you can compare when you finish. Also make sure that you brush your teeth well and floss them.

When you are getting braces put on, the dentist or orthodontist will put a sort of glue on your teeth that doesn’t taste very nice. The brackets will then be cemented onto your teeth and the wire put through the brackets . Usually the whole process will take a couple of hours if you are getting both sets of teeth done. You shouldn’t be in any pain when you’re doing it, and if you are you should tell the dentist.

Periodically you will have to go back to the dentist to get your braces tightened. This can be quite painful, and will feel a little bit sore after you have had the braces tightened.

Getting braces off is an entirely different matter, because it is a joyous time and you should really look forward to it. It is an amazing feeling to look at your teeth and compare how straight they are compared to what they used to be. In many cases you won’t really remember what the teeth used to be like so it can be a real shock when you see the picture. When I had my braces off I went out for a celebratory meal in the evening, because it is a really big occasion and you should feel proud when you get to the stage of getting them off. Your teeth will feel a bit strange after you get them off to start with, especially as they will feel so smooth without the cement and brackets on them.
