At Home Teeth Whitening – Is It Safe?

Many of us want to have whiter teeth, and with the amount of money that getting professional whitening at a dentists can cost there is definitely a lot of demand for at home teeth whitening methods. However there are lots of problems with these at home whitening methods, and it’s important to know what they are before you try and use any of them.

First of all, at home teeth whitening systems are rarely as good as going to a dentist. A dentist whitening your teeth will be much more efficient, and you will see results in a much quicker time. Of course it will cost more, but that is often a small price to pay if you really want to have whiter teeth. Even the best at home teeth whitening methods will not be as good as a professional whitening using a high concentration hydrogen peroxide whitening agent.

Also, lots of home remedies that you will find on the internet are simply not safe. For example on one website I found a tip that said to use lemon juice top whiten your teeth which you should NEVER go. Lemon juice and other kinds of fruit juice are acidic and will decay your teeth. They may make them whiter, but only because you are stripping off the top layer of the tooth and causing more problems for the future.

The best whitening methods you can use at home are baking soda or hydrogen peroxide, although they won’t be as effective as in a doctors chair. At home teeth whitening kits are available, but you should be aware of their limitations and the fact that they will take much longer to work. If you can cope with this then you could try using them, but only after making sure they are deemed safe by your dentist.

Always make sure that after you have used at home teeth whitening products that you still brush your teeth. Whitening is not the same as brushing, so even though your teeth might look cleaner after you have had them whitened they still need to be brushed.

Be careful when you are selecting an at home teeth whitening method, because some can be harmful. The best thing to do is visit your dentist and ask him for the best method as he or she will be most likely to know which is the right method for you.
